At the heart of our foundation is a deep love for public school teachers—their creativity, their courage, and their relentless belief in what students can become. Every grant we award is a vote of confidence in bold ideas and joyful learning, and we are continually inspired by how teachers transform those resources into meaningful experiences for their students. From hands-on projects to unforgettable classroom moments, these grants spark curiosity, confidence, and connection. The joy they bring doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it ripples outward to families, schools, and entire communities.

We also love coming together beyond the school day, especially at events like our Hearts and Smarts Trivia Night, on February 7th from 4-6pm at Town Hall, where laughter, generosity, and shared purpose fill the room. Emceed by WHPS teacher Matthew Dicks, this event is not to be missed! We still have space for a few more teams! Click here to register.

Thank you for being part of a community that champions teachers and believes that smart ideas, paired with big hearts, can change lives. Follow us on social media Facebook, X, and Instagram to find out more about these events and see more grants in action!

Susan and Joseph Sappington, MD Grant: Mystic Seaport Sci / SS Trip

5th Grade students at Smith STEM traveled to Mystic Seaport to study the history of maritime exploration and the era of colonial settlement in the Americas.

Students engaged in hands-on learning that combines these topics in an authentic environment, experiencing a custom-made tour connecting their study of science, social studies, and English-language arts.

While exploring Buckingham-Hall house, they learned about how people preserved food in absence of refrigeration. They watched a cooking demonstration in the wood-burning fireplace, learned about churning butter, and passed around a fish that had been preserved in salt six years earlier. The students were amazed by the lack of a microwave! They then participated in a spelling bee in a colonial school house. After that, they then toured Plymouth Cordage Company Ropewalk, where students got to participate in the ropemaking process before seeing those ropes in action on a whale ship. Students rounded out their trip to Mystic with a visit to the planetarium, learning about how sailors relied on the stars to navigate.
