Students at Charter Oak International Academy took a musical journey from Africa to the Americas. After studying with artist-in-residence, Dr. Eric Galm, they shared their knowledge of many musical traditions through live, interactive performances. This exciting unit of learning culminated in an outdoor evening event open to the entire school community. The Brazilian Festival featured student performers, Samba players from Trinity College, and much more! Melissa Zych shared “Dr. Galm was able to meet with each of my music classes. He gave a wonderful presentation that helped students to see the connection of migration, the African Diaspora, and how music spread throughout the world. Through his thoughtful, interactive approach to teaching about Brazilian music students were able to see how working together is important in the musical conversation that exists in Samba music today. Each student was able to sing, dance, and play instruments as they experienced Samba and other styles of Brazilian music. Many of our students are from Brazil and/or speak Portuguese. During the presentation these students were excited to share their knowledge and were able to help others with understanding the meanings of words and songs that were familiar to them.” |
