We love this time of year. There is so much to celebrate, and it seems like every weekend is filled with community events, from Johnny’s Jog to Hall’s Pops ‘n Jazz to Conard’s musical Disaster. Winter tournaments are wrapping up, brackets have hopefully not blown up yet, and spring teams are being formed. It’s a time to celebrate what has been accomplished and look forward to new beginnings ahead.

It’s no different at the Foundation. We’ve been celebrating Grants in Action and are looking forward to reading all the new applications rolling in. We’re grateful for the outpouring of community support. If you haven’t had a chance to support the Foundation, there is still an opportunity to support our Spring Fundraiser. We still have a limited number of Mystery Bags available for donations of $125 or more, and you can still buy $20 raffle tickets.

The raffle drawing is April 5th, so click here to get your raffle ticket and/or make a donation by April 4th! Yes, you may win a $500 Amazon gift card, theatre tickets, a West Hartford Orthodontics Gift Basket, or a $300 Avert/DORO gift card, but even if you don’t, you can be confident that every dollar you spend goes directly to funding grants for West Hartford Public Schools.

Latin Dance Lessons

The joy and laughter were palpable as Hall High students learned Latin dances. They built emotional bonds, energized their learning, and strengthened their sense of community by learning through shared challenges. Not only did they learn the steps, but they also improved their understanding of the music and dance’s multicultural roots, opening their hearts to a deeper acceptance of one another. Bravo to the collaboration of Physical Education, World Language, and Social Emotional Learning!

James M. Ellis Memorial Grant: Bomba in the 6th Grade General Music Classroom

The good vibes continued at King Philip and Bristow as 6th graders learned about bomba, a traditional music from Puerto Rico. Students got to try various instruments, including drums, offering an engaging way for them to learn about rhythm, teamwork, and cultural diversity through music. Students also learned how to dance fundamental bomba movements, sing traditional songs, and play bomba rhythms. The instruments purchased with these funds are built to last, so the impact of this grant will extend multiple years. Click here to check out the culmination of their learning!
