West Hartford is beautiful in springtime. Everywhere you look, you see new life. Daffodils are blooming, the sunsets at Fern Park are magical, and birds are chirping (perhaps earlier than we’d like!). Drives down Boulevard are a colorful delight, with bursts of lavender, lemon, magenta, and lime.

It may feel like magic, but this is in part the result of so many in our community tending their yards, planning their gardens, planting their bulbs and bushes and seeds.

The magic of the three grants featured below are similarly the result of so many dedicated teachers, continuing to look for opportunities to enrich and enhance the learning experience for our students.

With teacher appreciation week just around the corner, please remember that the magic that our teachers bring to the classroom each and every day is a result of a lot of planning, nurturing, and creativity. View their classrooms as you might observe your own garden.  And if you’d like to honor your teacher for teacher appreciation week, there’s no better way than by making a gift in their honor to the Foundation. It’s easy, simply click here, follow the prompts, and we will do the rest!

Mr. and Mrs. David Dupee Grant: Dusti Bowling--Children's Author Visit

Acclaimed middle-grade author Dusti Bowling visited Bristow, King Philip and Sedgwick and led interactive discussions about her popular novels, including Canyon’s Edge, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, and Across the Desert. Students asked questions about her own inspiration—including her rattlesnake skin and her cousin who served in Iraq—and for tips as aspiring authors. By learning directly from a professional author about the storytelling process, students deepened their appreciation for literature and were inspired to read more widely and write more creatively.

Carol Robbin Memorial Grant: What is America? - History and Storytelling through Art

On Thursday, March 20th, seventh graders from King Philip Middle School visited the New Britain Museum of Art’s “What is America?” exhibit and, led by docent guides, examined the ways that artists weave narratives and tell history through their art. Inspired by what they saw, students then spent the second half of the field trip in the museum’s art studio, creating American landscape collages inspired by what they saw. According to English Teacher Maggie Sullivan, “It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all and made possible by the generous donation of the Carol Robbin Memorial Grant from The Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools.”

Frankie and Bob Goldfarb Grant: Musical Moments - Nurturing Social Emotional Growth Through Music

Thanks to this grant, all Whiting Lane preschoolers have had the opportunity to participate in music therapy lessons throughout the 2024-2025 school year! A board certified music therapist from Music Moments Music Therapy Services visited each of the 8 pre-school classes monthly, providing engaging learning opportunities with a focus on further developing social and emotional skills.
