The sweet taste of summer is almost here. Concerts, parades, tournaments, recitals, and art shows fill up our calendars. We celebrate the growth our children have made. We mark the date of the opening of the pool, perhaps a Yard Goats game, or a visit to see family.

At the Foundation, we’re looking forward, too. This month, we read through applications for funding for the 2025-2026 school year and we are excited to announce the newest grant recipients in early June.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we are able to increase the amount of money awarded in grants next school year by $20,000! If you were planning on making a donation this school year, it’s not too late! Click here to donate today.

Amy and Judy Selzer Memorial Grant “Cluck and Learn”: Exploring Life Cycles through Chicken Eggs in the Context of Paleontology at Aiken

The "Cluck & Learn" project immersed 3rd-grade students in an engaging, hands-on exploration of life cycles, using both live chicken eggs and the fossilized remains of the Oviraptor. After renting chicken eggs and coop (a small crate) through Rent The Chicken, these third graders raised seven chick eggs. On the day they hatched, teacher Shannon Miller said, “We were all mesmerized all day, and we can’t wait to watch them grow and hold them.” Donor Jerry Selzer was able to attend the hatching and see this grant in action. If you’ve ever had children trying to agree on pet names, don’t worry; Shannon Miller used a spinner to select names for their chicks! Click here to view pictures.

Webersen Family Grant: Okey Ndibe Author Visit & Writing Workshop

Okey Ndibe, a West Hartford resident and acclaimed author, shared his personal experiences to bring the impacts of British colonization in Nigeria to life for social studies classes at Hall High. During his talk, he delved into different topics, including growing up in Nigeria during the end of British colonization, his family’s refugee experience during the Nigerian Civil War, his experience as an American immigrant, and his journey to becoming a successful author. He also met with two ELA classes, teaching about his narrative writing process.
