As the days begin to shorten, we are celebrating our grants in action, gearing up to read forty-one grant submissions from WHPS teachers, and embracing our new-found community traditions.

We’re two weeks away from our second Family Movie Night! We will be showing Encanto Sing-Along at Bristow Middle School on November 14th. Doors open at 5:30pm and the movie starts at 6:00pm. Costumes are welcome, and Joey’s Pizza and drinks will be available. While this is a free event, space is limited. If you haven’t RSVPed yet, please do so at www.fwhps.org!

We are also planting the seeds for our second Hearts and Smarts Trivia competition, taking place on Saturday, February 7th at Town Hall.

Follow us on social media Facebook, X, and Instagram to find out more about these events and see more grants in action!

Thomas and Cornelia Ford Memorial Grant: Cultivating Minds and Hearts in a Community Greenhouse

Fall harvest is officially underway at Sedgwick Middle School! Students recently picked over 32 pounds of sweet potatoes, which will be cured and served in the cafe for Thanksgiving. The greenhouse that made this possible, providing an inclusive, hands-on learning experience was funded in 2024-2025. The greenhouse enabled Sedgwick to extend the growing season and promote long-term sustainability. Like Sedgwick, many schools continue to reap the benefits of a FWHPS grant for multiple years after being funded.

Jack Darcey Memorial Grant: Cultural Dance Journey

At Hall High School, students explored social change, language, culture, and history through the study of traditional dances from Costa Rica, Argentina, Spain, and Peru, thanks to the generous support of the Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools. Through lively steps, partner exchanges, and shared laughter, students built deeper connections with one another while embracing new cultural perspectives. As students actively engaged in the rhythms and movements of Swing Criollo, Tango, Sevillanas, and Huayno, they deepened their understanding of each dance's multicultural roots and opened their hearts to greater acceptance, curiosity, and global awareness. See them in action here.
