Crate and Barrel Grant: Building Thinking Classrooms

“If we want our students to think, we need to give them something to think about.” Peter Liljedahl

Fourth grade students at Braeburn use vertical white boards to make their thinking visible, flexibly collaborating to solve problems in multiple ways. Mrs. Tara Baker said, “If they are thinking, they are engaged, and if they are engaged, they are thinking. That is the brilliance of doing math standing, in random groups, and on vertical surfaces.” Ideas flow and student voices are heard. This approach empowers students to think critically, communicate effectively, and approach math with confidence and curiosity.

Heather Congdon Memorial Grant: Connecting Language Learning with Cultural Experiences—Yale Art Gallery Field Trip

A Letter of Gratitude from Weimei Yao, Chinese Teacher at King Phillip Middle School:

“I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generous support in funding our last Friday field trip to the Yale University Art Gallery. Because of your contribution, our students were able to explore authentic Chinese artifacts and artworks firsthand. They participated in engaging, expert-led programs that brought Chinese history and culture to life. The experience deepened their appreciation for the Chinese language and its connection to art, history, and cultural identity.

The trip was a wonderful success — our students had an amazing time and came away with lasting memories and meaningful insights. I’ve attached a few photos from the visit that capture their excitement and engagement; I hope you enjoy seeing the impact your generosity made possible.”
