After reading and analyzing S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age classic, 8th graders at both King Philip Middle School and Sedgwick Middle School attended The Outsiders on Broadway. According to Sedgwick teacher Kyra Blair, “Students were able to make authentic connections between the novel and the performance while also developing a greater appreciation for the arts, and see reading as something that can inspire emotion, conversation, and shared experiences.”
King Philip students reported understanding the story “more deeply than reading alone,” and “seeing characters as real people, not just names in a book.” Teacher Jessica Kerelejza said, “What began as a classroom novel became something far more vivid: a shared experience that students could see, hear, and feel. I know we made memories that will last a long time.”
