September 2026

The 2026-2027 school year is in full swing, and teachers around the district are putting into action 27 new grant projects funded by the Foundation! The $46,000 given out in the first grant cycle of the school year is already going to innovative programs – like helping 7th graders in all three middle schools understand photosynthesis by using sensors that help students see invisible gas exchanges, and bringing Webster Hill Pre-K students to local greenhouses, parks, and farms for hands-on education about the natural world.

Thank you for supporting these creative experiences for West Hartford students - and so many more. Click here to see all of this year’s selected grants. And teachers, there is still time to apply for funding for this school year. The application deadline for a Cycle 2 grant is October 14th. The Foundation is awarding $50,000 for this cycle. For more information check our website at https://fwhps.org/page/grant-instructions.

And we’re excited to announce that our two popular community events are back this year! We will be screening Toy Story 5 at our movie night on November 13th from 6-8 at Morley School (come at 5:30 for pizza!), and Hearts and Smarts returns to Town Hall on Saturday, February 6, for a night of trivia fun.

You may also have just received our letter for this year’s donation campaign. If you’d like to support another year of innovative, memorable opportunities for West Hartford Students online, click Donate to FWHPS to help fund the next cycle of grants.

Parades, Punches, and Professors: Explaining Chinese Learning Beyond the Classroom

Students taking AP Chinese at Hall High School connected with Chinese culture last year in three fresh ways supported by a Foundation grant. They planned and held a Lunar New Year parade in school, learned techniques in Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Dragon dance and Lion Dance and their history from a professional martial arts instructor who came into class, and visited a college-level Chinese class at Yale to see the next steps in language study. Teacher Connie Xu said of the Yale visit, “many graduates wrote to me in cards that this experience is the most memorable in their world language journey.”

First Grade Listening Library

A Foundation grant helped Duffy School outfit its first grade listening center with both new recordings and physical books to help students build listening comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, and familiarity with paging through books – without screens! Teachers also purchased a felt board and accessories that students used to retell what they’d learned and interact with the stories.Teacher Katie Lorraine-Mace described the library as “a valuable part of our classroom literacy instruction and will continue to benefit students in the years to come.”

Help us continue our mission!

The grants we award fund opportunities above and beyond what the school budget allows. This is why your support is so important to the work we do. Your donation to the Foundation directly supports innovative, memorable opportunities for West Hartford Public School students.
