As the Foundation continues to grow, we strive to connect with the community through multiple platforms.  With this in mind, we have expanded our social media presence by creating an Instagram account to connect directly with students, parents, teachers and donors. Beth Mazur, Bugbee art teacher, reflects on the grant she received and implemented during the 2021-2022 school year.

“Mr. Labadia is a gift. His passion for literature and the arts connected beautifully throughout this grant project. Rick sparked our students personal stories through a literature text, Memory Jars. His expertise as a educator guided our thinkers and artists on a journey to identify pivotal moments in their lives that have shaped them into who they are. He also opened their hearts to the understanding of listening to other peoples stories is vital to grow as a human.” 

Last year, Elizabeth Fay at Charter Oak received funding from the Foundation for the Hargreaves Family Grant: Mariachi Mania. This project allowed students preK – fifth grade to explore Mexican culture through music and art. The students learned to sing and play mariachi music, created a beautiful mural and learned about the different traditions from the Mexican culture. Mariachi experts visited Charter Oak Elementary and worked with the students and at the end of the project, there was an evening concert celebration.

This grant allowed 4th grade students at Whiting Lane Elementary School to have greater access in the classroom to texts featuring multicultural characters with different backgrounds, family structures, and interests. Adding these texts to the classroom collections aligned with the district’s shared vision of equity and allowed ALL students to see pieces of their own identify reflected in current literature.
