English language learners at Whiting Lane Elementary School benefited from hands-on, real world experiences and applied their learning and development in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and language acquisition. Before taking a field trip to Lyman Orchards to pick apples and pumpkins and explore the corn maze, the students learned vocabulary and content about plant biology and the local fall harvest. Following the trip, the students engaged in structured discussion in small groups where they had the opportunity to use key vocabulary and explore the concepts of culture and tradition. In addition, students and families showcased their own cultural traditions at a school-wide Multicultural Night with presentations that included music, food, performances and crafts. This allowed the students to explore their own cultural assets and share them with their peers while strengthening their own sense of value and enriching the broader school community. |
