When you think back to your own school days, what do you remember most? It probably wasn’t a worksheet. It was likely something hands-on. Something special. Something that happened because a teacher went above and beyond to create that experience for you.

This week, we are reading exciting grants from teachers across West Hartford Public Schools who want to create more of these experiences for our students.

Thanks to your continued interest and generosity, we are not only continuing two cycles of grant funding per year but also increasing the amount of money we are distributing in 2024-2025 by $10,000.

To “see” our amazing grants in action, follow us on social media on Facebook, X and Instagram. To help us continue to enrich our schools’ classrooms and create excellence beyond the school budget limits, please consider making a tax-deductible donation today.

Alexander M. and Catherine Maus Wright Grant: Expanding the Digital Music Experience

What if you could play an instrument without physically touching it? Introducing the theremin, an electronic digital instrument that does just that. Even if you’ve never heard of it before, it has been played by the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Erykah Badu, and now, thanks to a collaboration across all three middle schools, every eighth grade student in West Hartford Public Schools by the end of this school year.

Before they use the theremin to play songs, they will get to collaboratively build it, using a MicroKit. Want to learn more? Check out this video clip where you can not only hear them in action but also see the look of pure joy on King Philip Middle School’s Alan Smith’s face.

SEPTO Grant: The Art of Inclusion: Inspiring Creativity in Students with Disabilities

Art experiences allow individuals to communicate their stories, celebrate their identities, and contribute to the rich tapestry of human expression. Thanks to the SEPTO Grant, teaching artists from Southington Community Cultural Arts are leading eight classes with all students in the Post-Secondary program, enabling them to create unique pieces that express their individuality.

Providing art experiences for people with disabilities is not only about fostering creativity and confidence, but also about promoting inclusion, empowerment, and well-being. The Foundation is proud to support hands-on experiences for all learners.
